Pastor Dave's Devotions Devotions by Pastor Dave Lyle Devotion forTuesday, Dec. 5: “And this is my prayer, that your love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight to help you to determine what is best, so that in the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless, having produced the harvest of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God.” Philippians 1:9-11 Every so often I attend a local high school football or basketball game. These are exciting events, made more exciting by the groups of young women and men who stand on the sidelines, yelling, jumping, and cajoling the athletes on to great performances and stirring the fans into a frenzy. There is no doubt about the importance of cheerleaders at these games. Wouldn’t it be nice if we all had cheerleaders with us all the time, joyfully encouraging us as we head off to work or take our the garbage? In a sense, we do. We serve this role for each other as fellow members of the body of Christ. We promise, every time we witness a baptism, to do exactly that. Paul’s words to the Philippians are an extended cheerleading to one of the congregations dearest to his heart. And what a cheer! Paul sees the faithfulness of these people, and spurs them on to greater heights, that their “love may overflow more and more” through their Lord Jesus Christ, to the glory of God. It’s unlikely that we’ll ever have our own group of enthusiastic folks cheering us on. Unless, that is, we commit ourselves to doing it one for another, that our lives may also overflow more and more to the praise of our God.
