PHILOSOPHY STATEMENT:

Parish Health Ministry is a wholistic health care ministry providing spiritually-focused care for First English Lutheran Church members and their families. The main focus of Parish Health Ministry is to provide a resource to members of the congregation to assist them in making decisions about health-related issues within the context of their spirituality. This unique health ministry encompasses elements of pastoral care and community health nursing.

The role of health minister is filled by a parish nurse who responds to the spiritual, emotional and physical needs of church members. This is accomplished by providing leadership in identifying and meeting the health education and counseling needs of the congregation. The parish nurse acts as a health care educator, community resource liaison, advocate, and referral source for the congregation. The parish nurse is able to bridge the relationship between faith and health. The parish nurse builds on and strengthens the capacity of individuals, families and the congregation as a whole to understand and care for one another in the light of their relationship to God, faith traditions, themselves and the broader society.

At the core of Parish Health Ministry is the belief that all persons are sacred and must be treated with respect and dignity. Responding to this belief, the parish nurse works to empower individuals to become more active partners in the management of their personal health resources.

The principle understanding in Parish Health Ministry is that health is a dynamic process encompassing the physical, emotional, social and spiritual dimensions of a person and that spiritual health is central to well-being. This understanding leads to the conclusion that healing and well-being may exist in the absence of a cure.

Goals:

Enhance the physical, emotional and spiritual health and well-being of FELC members.

Objectives:

  • Establish a permanent Health Ministry Cabinet to work with the parish nurse to accomplish Health Ministry objectives by May 2007

  • Ready the workspace for the parish nurse before the hire date.

  • Hire a parish nurse to lead the Health Ministry of FELC by fall 2007.
  • Direct the parish nurse to design and implement programs with initial priority focused on the very young and the very old population of our members.
